Sweet Trickery

I had one of the most wonderful dreams last night. It was one of those movie type dreams that I am not in. Robin Williams played the leading role.

In this mind movie, Robin Williams was the small town hero. He looked to old for college, but he was in college anyway. He never did anything heroic really... He did a lot of small, nice things that made everyone happy. He was just such a nice guy, it was unbelievable. He was well loved in his small town and at the small college he attended.

Robin was quite an athlete. Unfortunately, he was injured just before the big, yearly competitive track and field events held in the town. Normally, he competed in every event at this yearly competition. The town looked forward to him, his comedy, statements, and his giant smile. It looked like it was going to be little bit of a sad day for the town, but Robin figured out that, despite his injury, he could still compete in two of the events. (I never figured out which two... I never saw him compete.) He showed up in a bright multi-colored joker suit with long flowing tassels as a hat. He decided he would be present at all the events since he was the captain of the track and field team. He wanted everyone to have the advantage of his happy presence not as a conceited gesture, but just because he wanted to offer everyone something of himself .

One of the competing team captains, who did not know Robin, arranged to have him beat up during the games. He took one look at the loud joker suit and decided that the purpose of his being there was to distract everyone on his team, hampering concentration. Just before the first pole vault, Robin trotted out to the field and so did this competing captain. Robin stayed still and let the first guy on the other team do his jump without any distraction. He did not make so much as a peep or move a muscle. As soon as the man completed his jump, he spoke to the other captain. "HEY! How are you doing!?" he fired off quickly offering a big cheerful greeting to the competing captain. The man on the other team did complete a nice jump and the crowd was cheering for him. Robin put his arms up and did a funny little celebration dance for the man on the field. The other captain realized immediately he had made a huge error. He tried to signal everything to do with the kids beating up Robin from the field to stop, but he could not get through.

Robin went to rest with his team and the kids poured out. They came with wooden hockey sticks and Robin did not move. He had a helmet over his face and was pretending to sleep. I was horrified! Suddenly, seeing the kids again, they had surprised everyone by switching to wiffle ball bats. The other team members never even budged. The kids playfully beat up Robin even ringing the bell of his helmet over his head a little. Since he was such an all around nice guy, and a bit of a trickster, the kids wanted to surprise him. He seemed to be prepared for the whole incident too. The joke was apparently on the competing team captain.

The movie ended with Robin giving a huge motivational speech full of intensity and drama. There was much hollering and cheering as a result. "Come on, YOU KNOW YOU CAN GET OUT THERE AND DO THIS!" The audience was going crazy responding to his words. As the camera pulled back to take in the whole scene, you could see that he was giving a motivational speech to all the young volunteers that were going to go out and sell hot dogs and sodas to the crowd. The rest of the crowd was listening and enjoying the show cheering for the little people to come out with their goods.

This man was a hero, not because he saved anyone, or stopped criminals during deadly crime scenes. He was a hero because he loved everyone and proved it at every turn and in every action. He did what he could even when he could not do what he expected to, such as perform in an athletic event he trained for. He gave attention to everyone and every thing. Apparently, you could not even offer little kids good money to really beat him up. He responded to strife with a nice sense of humor and sweet trickery the world can appreciate.

Three cheers for Robin in that cute little joker suit. Hip, hip, hurray! A great big "HUZZAH!" for the joker for a change.
